Biography

Gonçalo Gato
Gonçalo Gato was born in 1979 in Lisbon, Portugal. Master in Composition (supervised by professors Christopher Bochmann and Carlos Caires) by the Universidade de Évora (2010). Initially, studied composition with Eurico Carrapatoso and then, in 2008, he graduated from the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa where he studied with Luís Tinoco, Carlos Caires, João Madureira and Sérgio Azevedo. Gonçalo also graduated in Chemistry before devoting himself to music. He is now active as one of the directors of the recently formed Nova Orquestra de Lisboa. Other activities include playing guitar in a contemporary jazz project.

Gonçalo has been developing an activity as a teacher of music in various portuguese institutions like the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas (FCSH) of the New University of Lisbon, the Academia de Amadores de Música of Lisbon and the Escola Profissional de Imagem (EPI-ETIC).

Main Highlights:

– Premiered a short Opera called “Mudos” (libretto by Vasco Gato) in São Luiz Theatre in Lisbon as part of an opera contest (2008);
- Won the first prize of the composition contest of Festival Internacional da Póvoa de Varzim in the chamber music category with the piece “Derivação” for solo piano (2008);
- Premiered his first mixed-media work – “Wandering” – for alto saxophone and 2 laptops performing live electronics and spatialization (2008);
- Selected to compose for the Algarve Ochestra’s score reading workshop (Nov. 2008).
- His work “Recta e Curva” (Straight line and Curve, 2009) was selected for the Young Creators (Portugal) showcase held in 2010.
